Business software and services company Oracle is moving its corporate headquarters from the Silicon Valley area to Austin, Texas, to provide workers “with more flexibility about where and how they work,” the company said December 11.
“Depending on their role, this means that many of our employees can choose their office location as well as continue to work from home part time or all the time,” Oracle said.
The company opened a facility in Austin in 2018, but indicated that it doesn’t plan to move staff from its existing headquarters in Redwood City to Austin.
“By implementing a more modern approach to work, we expect to further improve our employees’ quality of life and quality of output,” the company said in its statement.
Employees who move from California to Texas will go from the state with the highest top personal income tax rate in the nation (13.3 percent), to a state that does not impose a personal income tax.
Oracle founder Larry Ellison told employees that he has moved to Hawaii, and added, “I’ll be using the power of Zoom to work from the island of Lanai.” Hawaii has a state income tax with a top rate of 11 percent. (Source: CNET, December 15.)
