Bart Baer, who led Deloitte Tax’s national California tax services practice group for more than 21 years, is now serving as CalTax’s chief tax counsel, President Robert Gutierrez announced this week.

“Bart has been an integral part of the CalTax Board of Directors for many years,” Gutierrez said. “His expertise adds to CalTax’s strength when representing taxpayers in legislative, regulatory, and judicial proceedings.”

At Deloitte, Baer led a team of more than 20 attorney and accounting professionals who managed complex California income/franchise tax consulting and controversy matters for multistate and multinational corporations. He previously served as a partner with the law firm of Baker & McKenzie, focusing on various California tax issues.

Baer holds a degree in economics from the University of California at Davis, a law degree from the University of California Hastings College of Law, and a master of laws degree in taxation from the New York University School of Law.

Gutierrez also announced that Faith Giordano, who has served as a legislative intern since September, has officially joined the CalTax staff as the association’s legal assistant. Giordano will monitor court cases, participate in research, and write for CalTax publications. She will receive her bachelor’s degree in 2022 in both political science and communications from the University of California at Davis.
