While the University of California has been vocal in recent years in its quest for more state funds to avert various crises, it also has been increasing its payroll substantially. Spending on UC salaries has increased nearly 29 percent over the past six years. The 10-campus system paid $10.6 billion to 259,043 employees last year, up from $8.2 billion in 2006. Staff numbers grew approximately 6 percent during the six-year period, and enrollment grew approximately 10 percent.
The UC pension system fund had a project $10 billion unfunded liability as of last year, and UC's retiree health care fund had a $14.6 billion unfunded liability. (Source: Orange County Register, September 10.)
