California’s Economy:
More Than 3,700 Californians Lost Their Jobs in August


In August, 3,728 Californians were affected by permanent or temporary layoffs or business closures, according to data maintained by the Employment Development Department (EDD).

The EDD requires employers laying off employees and closing to notify the state in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, or WARN letter.

Among the businesses filing WARN notices in August:

Last month, 3,663 employees were affected by layoffs and closures. Since January, 37,567 employees have been affected by closures and layoffs.

Oracle Announces Major Layoffs in Silicon Valley. Oracle sent a notice to the state September 1 that it plans to lay off 983 employees in Santa Clara County. The company plans to cut up to 2,500 jobs worldwide, including jobs in the San Diego area. (Source: San Jose Mercury News, September 7.)
