Manhattan Beach Teachers Union Holding Students Hostage to Their Demands

Students in the Manhattan Beach Unified School District (Los Angeles County) are being held hostage by the district's teachers union in a labor dispute. Here are the punishments teachers are meting out to students:

• Teachers will not write letters of recommendation for college;
• Teachers will not advise or host any middle school or high school clubs;
• Teachers will avoid arriving at school significantly early or staying late; and
• Teachers will close their classrooms during snack time and lunch.

The union wants a 9 percent salary increase. The district says the district's finances will not support such largesse. The district also forecasts that the district will lose $2.8 million if Proposition 30 does not pass in November.
